Legal Counsel
Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) is seeking a Legal Counsel to join its U.S. Legal Division team in Scottsdale, AZ; Dallas, TX; or Lansdowne, VA. This role involves complex litigation and appellate advocacy, with a focus on First Amendment law and civil rights actions under 42 U.S.C. § 1983. The Legal Counsel will report to the Senior Counsel and play a pivotal role in advancing ADF's mission to protect religious freedom, free speech, and other fundamental rights.
Key responsibilities include conducting legal research, interviewing clients and witnesses, preparing and responding to written discovery, and representing clients in court and before administrative agencies. The Legal Counsel will also draft legal documents, advise clients on their legal rights, and oversee administrative and paralegal support functions. Additionally, the role involves training junior attorneys, reviewing in-house contracts, and engaging with the media regarding cases and issues.
Candidates must possess a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree, an active license in at least one U.S. state bar, and the ability to meet admission requirements in the relevant jurisdiction within one year. Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office and Westlaw, are essential. The ideal candidate will have excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to handle confidential information professionally and work effectively within a team. Trial experience is preferred.
