Legal Counsel - Content Safety, Product & Privacy
Canva is seeking a Legal Counsel to join its Product and Privacy team in Sydney, Australia. This role offers a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of AI, product counseling, legal strategy, and governance, supporting Canva's mission to empower the world to design. The position is based in Sydney, with a hybrid work model that allows flexibility between remote work and in-person collaboration.
In this role, the Legal Counsel will identify and advise on legal issues related to online content and product safety, platform regulations, privacy, intellectual property, and AI. Responsibilities include building strong relationships with product and engineering teams, contributing to the development of company-wide safety policies, drafting legal playbooks, collaborating with various internal teams, and staying updated on global AI, safety, and privacy regulations. The role also involves participating in the review and coordination of potential safety, privacy, or data security incidents.
Candidates should be legally qualified with an AU/NZ practicing certificate and have over 8 years of legal experience, including some in-house experience. A deep understanding of modern AI technology and products is essential, along with familiarity with key online safety laws and regulations, privacy, platform, and consumer laws related to digital products and generative AI. The ideal candidate is a collaborative, pragmatic, business-minded lawyer who can simplify compliance without compromising standards and thrives in fast-moving environments.
