Canonical is seeking a Linux Kernel Engineer to join its globally distributed team responsible for developing and maintaining Ubuntu's Linux kernels across a wide range of hardware platforms. This role offers the opportunity to work on both stable and cutting-edge kernels, contributing to one of the most widely used open-source operating systems.

In this position, you will collaborate with silicon, cloud, and hardware manufacturers to enable hardware and virtualization features, diagnose and resolve kernel issues, and take ownership of specific Ubuntu Linux kernel flavors. Your day-to-day tasks will include improving tooling and automation for kernel delivery and testing, as well as submitting, reviewing, and applying kernel patches.

The ideal candidate will possess an exceptional academic track record, an undergraduate degree in Computer Science or a related STEM field, and significant programming experience in C. A solid background with git, broad knowledge of the Linux kernel and its subsystems, and demonstrated experience with kernel patching and debugging are essential. Strong communication skills in English, both written and oral, are also required.

Canonical offers a distributed work environment with twice-yearly team sprints in person, a personal learning and development budget of USD 2,000 per year, annual compensation reviews, recognition rewards, annual holiday leave, maternity and paternity leave, an Employee Assistance Programme, opportunities to travel to new locations to meet colleagues, and Priority Pass with travel upgrades for long-haul company events.

As a pioneering tech firm at the forefront of the global move to open source, Canonical publishes Ubuntu, one of the most important open-source projects and the platform for AI, IoT, and the cloud. Working at Canonical provides a unique opportunity to contribute to impactful projects, collaborate with a diverse and talented team, and grow professionally in a remote-first company that values excellence and innovation.
