As Principal Engineer for the Model Development Platform at Wayve, you will oversee the entire architecture that supports our AI model lifecycle, encompassing data ingestion, model training, experiment scheduling, and on-road testing. This role places you at the intersection of AI research, large-scale distributed systems, and robotic operations, ensuring the platform's reliability, scalability, and coherence to facilitate rapid iteration and safe deployment of autonomous driving models.

Your key responsibilities will include designing and evolving the platform's architecture to meet performance, latency, and availability targets, ensuring system reliability and observability. You will lead cross-disciplinary technical initiatives, integrating front-end web applications, distributed training, data pipelines, and optimization algorithms to create a unified platform. Additionally, you will address complex technical challenges, conduct architectural reviews, and develop systems that optimize model testing in both simulation and real-world environments. Collaboration with Product, Research, and Operations teams will be essential to align the platform's architecture with user needs and to co-own the long-term roadmap.

To be successful in this role, you should have over 10 years of experience in designing and building large-scale distributed systems, ML/AI infrastructure, or full-stack web applications, with at least 3 years in a staff or principal-level engineering position. A proven ability to design systems spanning web platforms, ML pipelines, and large-scale compute orchestration is essential. Experience in driving platform reliability improvements, defining SLAs/SLOs, and building self-healing and observable systems is also required. Strong hands-on skills in distributed computing, workflow orchestration, data modeling, and API design, along with the ability to write and review production-quality code, are necessary. Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills, as well as a demonstrated success in mentoring engineers and cultivating a culture of engineering excellence, are also important.
