Principal Engineer
The Principal Engineer at Modulr will play a pivotal role in leading the design and development of our payments platform, ensuring it meets the highest standards of performance, scalability, and reliability. As a key member of the Engineering and CTO team, you will collaborate with cross-functional squads to solve complex problems and drive technological innovation within the company. Modulr is a rapidly growing payments business in the UK and Europe, dedicated to transforming how businesses manage and process payments.
In this role, you will be responsible for designing and implementing core framework components such as the workflow engine, rules/decision engine, and event-driven orchestration layer. You will lead the development of event-driven architectures that support real-time decision-making and ensure auditability across multiple domains. Additionally, you will spearhead the creation of AI-driven workflows that assist human operators while maintaining explainable and controlled decision processes. Your expertise will guide the definition of domain models, service boundaries, and integration contracts, promoting loosely coupled and vendor-agnostic systems.
The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in software engineering, with a strong background in designing and building scalable, high-performance systems. Proficiency in event-driven architectures, domain-driven design, and AI integration is essential. You should have a proven track record of leading technical teams, driving engineering standards, and implementing best practices in code quality, testing, observability, reliability, and security. Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work collaboratively in an agile environment are also required.
