Betterment is seeking a seasoned Senior Engineering Manager to lead a team of backend engineers within our Broker Dealer division. This team is integral to our platform, handling millions of dollars in transactions daily and ensuring strict regulatory compliance. The role involves balancing the timely delivery of new features with maintaining system stability and scalability, all while fostering a culture of agility and technical excellence.

Key responsibilities include managing a team of 6-8 backend engineers, overseeing the development of innovative trading technology that powers our investing products. The manager will collaborate closely with Product, Engineering, Operations, Legal, and Compliance teams to deliver right-sized solutions. Additionally, the role involves mentoring engineers, driving effective technical decision-making, and championing the maintainability and reliability of the technology built by the team.

The ideal candidate will have at least 3 years of formal engineering management experience and over 8 years of experience in building and maintaining backend distributed systems using Java or a similar strongly typed programming language. Proven experience in managing, mentoring, and inspiring talented engineers is essential, along with the ability to rapidly close knowledge gaps and establish trust within the organization. A track record of fostering accountability and ownership within a team is also crucial.

Betterment offers a competitive salary range of $210,000 to $245,000 per year for this position, along with a comprehensive benefits package that includes health, dental, and vision insurance, a 401(k) plan with employer match, and a flexible paid time off policy. The role is based in our New York City headquarters, with a hybrid work arrangement requiring in-office attendance Monday through Thursday.
