Staff Engineer, Backend
Betterment is seeking a Staff Engineer, Backend to join our Broker Dealer organization. This team is central to our platform, handling millions of dollars in transactions daily and ensuring strict regulatory compliance. As a key member, you will help define our technical vision, enhance system stability, and scale our systems to deliver greater value to our customers.
In this role, you will drive the technical vision and long-term strategy of the team. You will build innovative trading and money-movement technology that empowers people to make the most of their money. Collaborating with purpose, you will spread knowledge across the organization, level up engineering practices, and mentor other engineers. You will also create efficiency through clean code, pragmatic programming, and lean engineering.
The ideal candidate has over 10 years of professional experience in at least one object-oriented language, with a strong preference for Java. You should have more than 7 years of experience with SQL and relational databases, including designing schemas and writing detailed SQL queries. A strong command of fundamental algorithms and data structures is essential. Experience scaling and optimizing large-scale distributed systems, designing and maintaining core backend software components, and leading projects that span multiple teams is required. An understanding of how to make tradeoffs to ship without compromising quality and an appreciation for agility and pragmatism in software development are also important.
