Canonical is seeking a Staff Engineer to lead the adaptation of Ubuntu for mission-critical applications in sectors such as automotive, aerospace, and industrial robotics. This role involves transforming complex regulatory and compliance requirements into concrete engineering practices, ensuring Ubuntu meets the stringent standards of highly regulated environments. The successful candidate will join Canonical's industrial standards team and collaborate closely with engineering leadership to define and implement this vision.

Key responsibilities include leading and challenging the engineering culture across the organization to instill practices that meet regulatory demands. The role requires unifying agile methodologies across multiple projects and teams, defining continuous improvement processes, and establishing qualification requirements to support engineering quality standards. Additionally, the Staff Engineer will develop methods for measuring quality and foster strategic relationships with external working groups, committees, and partners.

The ideal candidate will have strong experience in engineering and process management within an agile environment, along with knowledge or certification in standards addressing software quality, such as ISO/IEC 25010 or ASPICE. A proven track record in developing and growing teams, leading successful compliance and certification efforts, and experience with Linux are essential. Additional skills that are advantageous include a background in software development, experience in establishing product engineering development metrics and KPIs, and strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
