Battery Controls Engineer, Charging
Archer is seeking a Battery Controls Engineer to join our team in San Jose, California. In this role, you will be instrumental in developing and optimizing control algorithms for high-voltage battery charging and thermal management systems for our Midnight eVTOL aircraft. As a Battery Controls Engineer, your primary responsibilities will include developing and refining advanced control algorithms for high-voltage battery charging and thermal management. You will validate control software through various testing methodologies, including Software-in-the-Loop (SIL), Model-in-the-Loop (MIL), Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL), and aircraft-level integration testing, ensuring system reliability under diverse operating and environmental conditions. Additionally, you will analyze data from laboratory, flight, and field tests to troubleshoot complex issues, refine algorithms, and continuously enhance charging performance. Collaboration with hardware, software, and systems engineering teams will be essential to define charge control subsystem requirements.
The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical field, along with a minimum of three years of experience in battery management system or charge control development. A comprehensive understanding of BMS principles, algorithms, and functionalities is required, as well as experience with Model-Based Design tools such as MATLAB, Simulink, and Stateflow. Proficiency in closed-loop control theory and thermodynamics is essential. Familiarity with automotive communication networks like CAN, LIN, or Ethernet, and experience with Vector tools such as CANalyzer and CANape, is highly preferred. The role demands a self-motivated individual capable of managing and prioritizing multiple tasks, with a collaborative mindset and a passion for learning and problem-solving.
Preferred qualifications include an understanding of battery cell chemistry behaviors and experience with electrical equivalent circuit models, knowledge of high-voltage vehicle or aircraft architectures, and experience with new product development in regulated industries such as aviation or medical devices. Familiarity with DO-178C software verification, ARP4754 development processes, ISO 15118, SAE J1772 standards, Agile development methods, and a passion for aviation are also advantageous.
