Chassis Engineer, Suspension
As a Chassis Engineer specializing in suspension systems at Harbinger Motors Inc., you will play a pivotal role in the engineering team, focusing on the design and implementation of advanced mechanical suspension systems for our next-generation medium-duty electric vehicle platform. This position encompasses the entire product lifecycle, from initial benchmarking and architectural definition for front and rear axles to the final release of production-ready components. Your contributions will ensure that our electric vans and pickup trucks deliver exceptional durability, safety, and ride quality, addressing the unique challenges posed by heavy-battery packaging and commercial duty cycles.
Your primary responsibilities will include defining the mechanical suspension architecture for front and rear axles, ensuring seamless integration with electric drivetrains. You will transition suspension components from early concepts to fully manufacturable parts, involving detailed packaging, layout, and refinement. Additionally, you will analyze the medium-duty segment to understand and surpass existing mechanical suspension standards for electric vehicles and commercial trucks. Translating vehicle-level requirements into detailed component specifications and supplier-facing requirements will be essential. You will also define and execute the Design Validation Plan (DVP), ensuring system safety and functionality through comprehensive reporting. Managing automotive suppliers through the Design for Manufacturing (DFM) process, overseeing part delivery, quality reports, and production milestones, as well as releasing complete engineering drawings and maintaining a rigorous project issue list to meet program milestones, will be key aspects of your role.
The ideal candidate will possess a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field with at least 5 years of relevant experience, or a Bachelor's degree with 7 years of relevant experience. A minimum of 5 years of experience in automotive suspension design, specifically for commercial applications or pickup trucks, is required. Additionally, 5+ years of experience designing suspension systems for electric or hybrid vehicles, with a deep understanding of EV-specific load paths, is essential. Expert-level proficiency in CATIA v5 and/or v6, particularly for suspension kinematics modeling and clearance checking, is necessary. A strong background in forging and casting design, with a proven track record of launching multiple parts into production, is also required. An expert understanding of suspension load paths, static and dynamic loads, and the interplay between moving and rotating components is crucial. Willingness to travel up to 20% domestically for supplier visits and testing is expected.
Preferred qualifications include experience developing CATIA v6 macros to automate and report clearances across a full range of suspension travel. Demonstrated "cradle-to-grave" product development experience, taking chassis components from concept to mass production, is highly desirable. A strong ability to set high-level design requirements for complex assemblies and drive resolutions for multi-disciplinary technical issues is advantageous. Familiarity with the specific durability and payload requirements of the medium-duty delivery and logistics sector is also preferred.
