Anthropic is seeking a Commercial Counsel to establish its legal presence in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, based in Sydney, Australia. This role involves serving as a strategic partner to sales teams, leading complex negotiations, and managing commercial deals to support the company's expansion across diverse APAC markets. The position offers an opportunity to shape the legal foundation in the region, designing processes and frameworks that scale with the company's growth.

Key responsibilities include advising sales leadership on complex commercial deals, negotiating and closing agreements with APAC companies across various industries, and navigating regional regulatory compliance requirements. The role also involves designing scalable contract frameworks, proactively managing legal and regulatory risks, and providing strategic guidance on emerging legal developments affecting AI technologies in APAC jurisdictions. Additionally, the Commercial Counsel will foster relationships with external stakeholders, including clients, regulatory bodies, and industry partners across the region.

Candidates should be admitted to practice as a lawyer in Australia, with deep expertise in complex technology agreements and regulatory compliance frameworks relevant to emerging technologies in APAC markets. Strong business judgment, effective communication skills, and a collaborative, solutions-oriented approach are essential. A strong understanding of AI technology trends and a commitment to responsible AI deployment are also important.

Preferred qualifications include at least 10-12 years of experience in relevant legal roles supporting commercial transactions across diverse client segments and industries, in-house experience at a technology company with APAC operations, and previous exposure to AI, machine learning, or other emerging technologies in commercial or regulatory contexts. Experience supporting sales teams across diverse client segments in deal negotiations and client relationship management, multi-jurisdictional experience across APAC markets, and comfort operating in fast-paced, ambiguous environments with shifting priorities are also preferred.
