Anthropic is seeking a Frontier Counsel to provide legal guidance at the intersection of AI development and responsible innovation. This role involves advising the Research and Compute teams on complex legal issues, including data acquisition, risk mitigation, and evolving regulatory landscapes. The ideal candidate will have experience navigating global legal challenges in a fast-paced technical environment, translating legal requirements into practical solutions for AI research and development.

Key responsibilities include advising Research teams on permissible data usage, partnering on data sourcing strategies, and maintaining data acquisition frameworks. The role also involves counseling the Compute team on legal considerations such as data localization, cross-border data transfers, privacy implications, and copyright issues related to compute infrastructure. Additionally, the Frontier Counsel will monitor regulatory developments related to AI training data and compute operations, adapting internal policies to ensure compliance across jurisdictions. Engaging with academics, industry groups, and other stakeholders to develop norms and best practices around data governance for AI development is also a key aspect of the role.

Candidates should possess a Juris Doctor (JD) and active membership in at least one U.S. state bar, with a preference for California. A minimum of 8 years of relevant legal experience is required, with significant experience advising on data localization, cross-border data transfer frameworks, copyright, privacy, and related issues for technology companies or AI/ML products. In-house experience is preferred. The ideal candidate will have a creative, practical problem-solving attitude, with the ability to translate and apply legal requirements to technical concepts related to model development. Experience advising on legal issues for AI products or services and academic research, with knowledge of the machine learning development lifecycle, is also desirable.

The annual compensation range for this role is $265,000 to $320,000 USD.
