Patent Attorney / Patent Agent
Samsung Semiconductor is seeking a USPTO-registered Patent Attorney or Patent Agent with a strong technical background in semiconductor physics, materials science, electrical engineering, or computer science. This role focuses on intellectual property (IP) portfolio management and offers flexibility to contribute across various responsibilities as team and company priorities evolve. The position is based at the San Jose headquarters, aligning with the company's flexible work policy.
Key responsibilities include reviewing invention disclosures, drafting patent applications, and responding to office actions in collaboration with inventors and external counsel. The role also involves overseeing patents, trade secrets, and know-how assets, generating technology landscape reports, and supporting invention-harvest meetings. Additionally, the individual will engage with engineering teams to capture emerging IP, lead patent review committees, coordinate with outside counsel, conduct freedom-to-operate analyses, and make strategic decisions to maximize portfolio value while controlling expenses.
Candidates must have active USPTO registration as a Patent Agent or Attorney and possess experience in semiconductor physics, materials science, electrical engineering, or computer science. A minimum of 3 to 10 years of experience in patent prosecution and drafting, either in a law firm or in-house environment, is required. The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to work independently, set priorities, deliver results within agreed timelines, quickly master new technologies, and effectively communicate and collaborate with inventors, engineers, and external counsel. The capability to assess technical and legal information to make informed IP strategy recommendations is also essential.
The base pay range for this position is $153,000 to $237,000 USD annually.
