Principal Software Engineer (Python, AI)
Diligent Corporation is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to lead the technical direction of our AI-enabled platform. This role involves architecting secure, scalable, serverless systems on AWS, defining patterns and governance practices adopted by multiple teams, and guiding the integration of AI across the stack. The position is based in London, United Kingdom, and follows a hybrid work model, requiring onsite presence at least 50% of the time.
Key responsibilities include shaping engineering strategy with broad organizational impact, driving platform evolution by identifying cross-cutting pain points, and leading the design of secure, scalable, reusable solutions built on AWS and modern serverless and microservice patterns. The role also involves leading architectural discussions and design reviews, owning AI architectural decisions end-to-end, and acting as the organization's AI thought leader by educating engineering teams on model behavior, agentic systems, and responsible AI practices. Additionally, the Principal Software Engineer will mentor and stretch senior and staff engineers, building technical leadership depth across the organization and maintaining high engineering standards.
The ideal candidate will have a principal-level track record at scale, with 10+ years of software engineering experience, including at least 3 years operating at Staff or Principal Engineer level in an organization of 100+ engineers. Deep, opinionated AWS platform expertise is essential, including experience designing multi-account AWS architectures and fluency with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform or CDK. The candidate should have production AI systems experience, having shipped AI-enabled systems into production, and practical experience with AI governance in real production environments. A proven track record in API design and backend platform delivery using Node.js/TypeScript, as well as strong organizational communication and influence skills, are also required.
