Senior Engineering Manager, Retention
Duolingo is seeking a Senior Engineering Manager to lead a high-impact product engineering team within the Retention area. This role involves co-leading a cross-functional team alongside a Product Manager to enhance learner habit formation and long-term engagement. The position is based in Pittsburgh, PA, or New York, NY.
The Senior Engineering Manager will be responsible for aligning on strategy, priorities, and success metrics for retention and habit-building features. Key duties include driving project execution from specification to implementation, conducting experimentation and analysis, and ensuring system reliability and scalability. The role also involves using data and rapid experimentation to inform decisions, designing A/B tests, and translating insights into product improvements that impact retention KPIs. Additionally, the manager will attract, grow, and retain diverse engineering talent, provide clear expectations and coaching, and build an inclusive team culture.
Candidates should have at least 3 years of experience leading, managing, and building software engineering teams, with a demonstrated ability to hire, develop, and retain talent. A proven track record of shipping multi-engineer, multi-week projects with measurable business impact is essential. Strong product instincts and comfort in highly experimental, data-driven environments are required, along with excellent communication and stakeholder management skills. Technical depth sufficient to guide architecture and implementation trade-offs, evolve quality standards, and mentor engineers on best practices is also necessary.
The salary range for this position is $204,000 to $306,000 USD annually. This compensation package includes equity and world-class benefits. The actual salary within the range is determined by factors such as skills, experience, education, and internal equity.
