Senior Opto-Mechanical Engineer: Payload/Sensor, Space
Anduril Industries is seeking a Senior Opto-Mechanical Engineer to join their Space team, focusing on the design and development of advanced space payloads and sensors. This role involves creating opto-mechanical designs for space payloads ranging from small cameras to large telescopes, contributing to the company's mission of enhancing Space Domain Awareness and Control for U.S. military and allied partners.
The engineer will be responsible for running finite element models and hand calculations to predict stresses in mechanical and optical components, conducting STOP analyses to evaluate structural and thermal effects on optical performance, and designing payload mechanisms that can withstand launch and space environments. Additional duties include performing thermal analyses to assess on-orbit temperatures, designing alignment features for precise payload pointing, and leading subsystem design reviews. The role also encompasses building prototypes, analyzing failures, transitioning successful designs to flight hardware, and mentoring junior engineers.
Candidates must possess a BS or higher degree in engineering or a hard science, with 5+ years of mechanical design experience and a demonstrated track record of success. Proficiency in CAD and the ability to create engineering drawings meeting industry standards are required. Experience with exotic opto-mechanical materials, high-reliability design, and vibration/shock resistance is essential. Strong fundamentals in optics, heat transfer, statics, solid mechanics, and materials are also necessary. The ability to obtain and hold a U.S. Top Secret security clearance is mandatory.
The position offers a salary range of $166,000 to $220,000 USD, with highly competitive equity grants included in the compensation package. Anduril provides comprehensive medical, dental, and vision plans at little to no cost to employees, along with income protection through life and disability insurance. Additional benefits include generous time off, family planning and parenting support, mental health resources, professional development reimbursement, commuter benefits, and relocation assistance where applicable.
Joining Anduril's Space team offers the opportunity to work on cutting-edge technology in a rapidly growing company dedicated to transforming defense capabilities. The role provides significant growth opportunities, a collaborative work environment, and the chance to contribute to national security through innovative engineering solutions.
