Senior Software Engineer, Backend
Fal is seeking a Senior Software Engineer, Backend, to join our team in San Francisco. This role is ideal for engineers who thrive on complex distributed systems and have deep experience with backend APIs, relational databases, and event-driven architectures. As a key member of our engineering team, you will build high-performance, reliable solutions across cloud-native platforms and global infrastructure for our fast-scaling, commerce-driven company.
In this position, you will identify, design, and develop foundational backend services that power Fal's commerce platform. Collaborating closely with product teams, you will understand functional requirements and deliver solutions that meet business needs. Your responsibilities will include writing clear, well-tested, and maintainable software and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) for both new and existing systems. Additionally, you will analyze and improve the robustness and scalability of existing distributed systems, APIs, databases, and infrastructure. Conducting design and code reviews, creating developer documentation, and developing testing strategies for robustness and fault tolerance will also be part of your day-to-day work.
The ideal candidate will have over 5 years of demonstrated experience in building large-scale, fault-tolerant, distributed systems and API microservices. Expert-level programming skills in one or more of Python, Go, or Rust are required. Experience in designing, analyzing, and improving the efficiency, scalability, and stability of various system resources is essential. Proficiency in writing and maintaining Infrastructure as Code (IaC), as well as in version control practices and integrating IaC with CI/CD pipelines, is expected. Experience with payment processors (e.g., Stripe) and billing systems, Kubernetes or containers, and building and operating data infrastructure (Kinesis, Airflow, Kafka, etc.) are considered a plus.
