Staff Flight Control Actuation Systems Engineer
Archer is seeking a Staff Flight Control Actuation Systems Engineer to join our team in San Jose, California. In this role, you will be instrumental in defining, designing, validating, and verifying system-level requirements for the flight control actuation system of our electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. You will collaborate closely with internal teams and suppliers to ensure compliance with both product and regulatory standards, acting as a multi-disciplinary integrator across actuator subsystems, flight control systems, and the aircraft as a whole.
Your primary responsibilities will include contributing to actuation product strategy, architecture definition, and planning. You will plan and coordinate engineering activities with a focus on disciplined and efficient execution. Additionally, you will author and take responsibility for the flight control and actuation system-level product requirements, ensuring compatibility with all interfacing systems. Ensuring the requirement set is complete and correct, with traceability to and fulfillment of business, technical, and operational objectives, will be key. You will coordinate with other Systems Engineers to ensure the fully integrated system meets its requirements and is optimized. Collaborating with systems and safety engineering teams to define the functional breakdown and identify functional and physical interfaces will also be part of your role. Leading and driving multi-disciplinary integration and problem resolution, supporting suppliers and internal teams in the development of lower-level requirement sets, and reviewing and assessing internal and supplier designs, documentation, and performance to ensure correctness, completeness, and quality of the product are essential tasks. Coordinating the Validation and Verification processes at the system level, ensuring the plans are followed and process independence is maintained, contributing to improving internal processes and tools, and contributing to writing system-level verification plans and procedures, including formal requirements verification, end-to-end robustness testing, performance analysis, and production acceptance test procedures are also part of your responsibilities. Supporting the development of compliance documentation such as the system certification plan, system compliance checklists, system review reports, system descriptions, issue paper development and responses, and supporting the development and review of aircraft-level technical documentation such as aircraft manuals and procedures will be expected.
The ideal candidate will possess a collaborative mindset, excellent verbal and written interpersonal communication skills, and strong organizational and self-leadership abilities. A passion for learning and problem-solving is essential. A degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field is required, along with over 10 years of relevant experience, preferably in the aerospace industry. Technical qualifications include experience developing or working with highly integrated systems (aerospace preferred), experience with actuation control system requirements and practical controls implementation, experience with actuation electronics, mechanical, and motor physics fundamentals, experience with EMI/EMC design, physics, mitigation, and related testing, experience with design and testing for harsh environments, familiarity with Systems Engineering standards used in civil aviation and the underlying reasons and purpose for each process and activity, experience with aircraft development from concept to certification and entry into service, and experience using one or more requirements management tools.
Compensation for this position is competitive, with a base pay ranging from $151,680 to $189,600 annually. Actual compensation will be determined based on factors such as job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Archer offers a comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, retirement plans, and performance bonuses.
