The Staff Solutions Engineer role at Block is a senior technical position within the Solutions Engineering team, focusing on driving complex partner and merchant integrations. This role involves close collaboration with Sales, Partnerships, and Product teams to deeply understand customer needs, showcase Block's APIs and services, and solve challenging technical problems that accelerate adoption. The position is based in Sydney, Australia, and supports Block's Afterpay platform, which is dedicated to providing innovative commerce experiences for merchants and payment service providers.

Key responsibilities include partnering with Sales, Relationship Management, and Partnerships teams to support developers integrating with the platform. The engineer will design and deliver technical solutions, such as building proof-of-concepts, custom reports, sample integrations, and troubleshooting complex issues. Acting as a trusted technical advisor, the role involves translating business requirements into scalable integration approaches and advocating for best practices. Additionally, the engineer will collaborate closely with product and engineering teams to surface customer feedback and influence the product roadmap. Creating and delivering compelling demos, presentations, and technical deep dives for both executive and engineering stakeholders is also a key aspect of the role.

The ideal candidate will have over 8 years of experience in technical customer-facing roles, such as partner engineering, solutions architecture, or sales engineering, working with enterprise merchants or global partners. Deep hands-on technical expertise is required, including comfort with building APIs, debugging integrations, and guiding developers through complex implementations. Proficiency in full-stack development and at least one programming language is essential, along with the ability to rapidly learn new tools and technologies. Strong communication skills are necessary to bridge technical and non-technical audiences and influence senior stakeholders. Proven success in leading technical projects or initiatives end-to-end in globally distributed, multicultural teams is also important. A strong understanding of payments, fintech, or commerce platforms is beneficial. Experience presenting to technical and executive audiences in both structured and impromptu settings is valuable. A willingness to travel for onsite client meetings (10-20%) is expected. Additional language skills, such as Mandarin, are a plus.
