Backend Engineer, AI
As a Backend Engineer on LaunchDarkly’s AI Configs team, you will develop critical systems that enable customers to control, monitor, and optimize their GenAI functionality. Working primarily with Go and Python, you will build both the web applications that customers interact with daily and the distributed systems that power AI evaluations at scale. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to a rapidly growing team focused on managing the complete software development lifecycle for GenAI features.
In this position, your key responsibilities will include building and maintaining scalable backend services and APIs that power the AI Configs product. You will collaborate with internal stakeholders, such as product managers, designers, and other engineering teams, to understand real-world challenges and improve GenAI workflows using LaunchDarkly's platform. Additionally, you will continuously optimize the performance, reliability, and scalability of backend systems, participate in architecture and design discussions, and stay up-to-date with the latest developments in the AI field and software development best practices.
The ideal candidate will have 2-4 years of experience with server-side programming languages, such as Java, Scala, Ruby, Python, or Golang. Hands-on experience building GenAI features or working with Large Language Models (LLMs), either through direct model integration or leveraging AI APIs like OpenAI, Google Cloud AI, or AWS Bedrock, is essential. A strong understanding of prompt engineering, fine-tuning models, or deploying AI services in production environments is also required. Additionally, experience with designing, implementing, and maintaining RESTful APIs, writing production-ready code with an emphasis on quality and maintainability, and working with distributed systems or data ingestion is important. Strong computer science fundamentals and a commitment to working in a communicative, collaborative environment are necessary.
Compensation for this role varies based on geographic location. For Level 2 positions, the target pay ranges are as follows: Zone 1 (San Francisco/Bay Area, NYC Metropolitan Area, Boston, Seattle) - $136,500 to $187,660; Zone 2 (Irvine, LA, Monterey, Santa Barbara, Santa Rosa, Austin, Portland, Philadelphia, Chicago) - $122,800 to $168,850; Zone 3 (all other US locations) - $116,000 to $159,500. In addition to salary, LaunchDarkly offers Restricted Stock Units (RSUs), health, vision, and dental insurance, and mental health benefits.
