KoBold Metals is seeking a Data Scientist at the Staff or Senior level to join our team in the United Kingdom. As a mineral exploration company leveraging artificial intelligence, we focus on discovering and developing resources essential for the transition to a low-carbon economy. Our global portfolio includes over 50 exploration properties targeting nickel, copper, cobalt, and lithium.

In this role, you will build predictive models and apply a range of scientific computing, statistical, and physics-based methods to identify evidence of ore-forming processes and predict locations of ore-grade mineralization in 2D and 3D. Collaborating closely with our geoscientists, you will develop exploration hypotheses, design data collection programs, and utilize proprietary exploration technology to reduce uncertainty in subsurface understanding.

Key responsibilities include developing KoBold’s proprietary software exploration tools, curating and integrating geophysical, geochemical, geologic, and geographic data into our data system, building models for statistically valid predictions about compositional anomalies within the Earth’s crust, creating visualizations for model performance evaluation, and applying data processing techniques to guide targeting efforts and inform exploration decisions.

The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience with Python’s data science packages and software engineering practices, collaborative software development using git, familiarity with unit testing and CICD pipelines, cloud computing resources, building and evaluating predictive models, handling data from various physical systems, and conducting geospatial analyses and visualizations. A strong foundation in applied statistics, Bayesian inference, and machine learning algorithms is essential. Candidates should hold an advanced degree in physical sciences, engineering, computer science, or mathematics, with a minimum of 4 years post-PhD or 8 years post-MS work experience, ideally as a data scientist or data engineer. Experience leading technical teams to apply novel scientific approaches to core business problems is also desired.

KoBold Metals offers a competitive compensation package, including a base salary range of $140,000 to $240,000 USD, plus equity and benefits. As a remote-first workplace, we are open to candidates residing in the United Kingdom and other specified countries, provided they are legally authorized to work in those locations.
