Protection Relay Engineer
xAI is seeking an experienced Protection Relay Engineer to join our Memphis team. This role focuses on designing, configuring, commissioning, and supporting SEL-based protection and automation systems for high-reliability power infrastructure that supports our AI compute facilities. As part of a small, highly motivated team dedicated to engineering excellence, the engineer will contribute directly to xAI's mission of creating AI systems that accurately understand the universe and aid humanity in its pursuit of knowledge.
The Protection Relay Engineer will perform detailed configuration and programming of SEL protective relays, such as SEL-751, SEL-787, and SEL-700G, using acSELerator QuickSet and SEL Grid Configurator. Responsibilities include developing and implementing custom automation logic in SEL RTAC platforms, designing and testing SCADA communication protocols, conducting factory and site acceptance testing, generating comprehensive documentation, and providing technical support during system energization and maintenance. Collaboration with project managers, SCADA engineers, and field crews is essential to ensure seamless integration and adherence to project schedules.
Candidates must have advanced proficiency in acSELerator QuickSet, Architect, and RTAC Web Interface. Demonstrated ability to develop complex automation sequences, synchrophasor applications, and remedial action schemes is required. Expertise in relay event analysis using SEL SynchroWAVE and Event Reporter, as well as familiarity with IEC 61850 configuration via SCL files, is essential. SEL Authorized Training, such as SEL-5030 and SEL-5033, is preferred, and a Professional Engineer (PE) license is a plus but not mandatory.
