Canva is seeking a Research Scientist specializing in Efficient AI to join our AI Efficiency team. This team is dedicated to developing and optimizing GPU-accelerated AI computing for applications such as design and video generation. As a member of this team, you will contribute to creating AI models that are both powerful and computationally efficient, impacting Canva's core products used by hundreds of millions of active users.

In this role, you will design and advance state-of-the-art generative AI models across multimodal domains. Your responsibilities will include improving AI efficiency through kernel and graph optimization, model compilation and systems optimization, model compression techniques like quantization and distillation, efficient model architecture design, and scalable inference systems. Collaboration with research, engineering, and product teams will be essential to bring innovations into production and translate research breakthroughs into impactful features within Canva's products. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to contribute to the broader AI community through publications at top-tier conferences.

The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in foundation models, particularly in generative AI such as diffusion models, large language models (LLMs), and vision-language models (VLMs). Experience in AI efficiency is crucial, including low-level optimization (kernel/graph), model optimization (quantization, distillation, compression), and efficient architecture design and inference systems. A strong academic and/or industry track record is required, with publications in leading conferences like NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, or CVPR, or meaningful open-source contributions. Proficiency in tools such as Python, PyTorch, Transformers, Diffusers, Megatron, DeepSpeed, and cloud platforms is also expected.

This position is open to candidates at all experience levels, including experienced professionals, 2026 and 2027 graduates, as well as internship opportunities. The role is based in Beijing, offering a dynamic and collaborative work environment. Joining Canva provides the chance to work on cutting-edge AI technologies, contribute to products with a global reach, and grow within a company that values innovation and efficiency.
