Senior Backend Engineer - Java - Product Platform (Remote across ANZ)
Canva is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join its Product Platform Supergroup, which focuses on building shared product foundations that enable teams to deliver consistent, fast, and reliable experiences at a global scale. This role offers the flexibility to work remotely across Australia and New Zealand, with options to utilize Canva's campuses in Sydney and Melbourne or co-working spaces in Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide.
In this position, you will be responsible for developing and evolving core backend frameworks, shared services, and developer APIs that accelerate product development. Your day-to-day tasks will include designing and delivering scalable systems that are easy to use, maintain, and extend. Collaboration with product teams to co-design abstractions that make feature delivery faster and safer is a key aspect of this role. Additionally, you will contribute to service patterns, conventions, and tooling that raise engineering standards across Canva, and work with Platform and Product teams to improve observability, rollout processes, and developer workflows. Mentoring engineers and advocating for a culture of simplicity, reliability, and innovation are also important components of the role.
The ideal candidate will have over six years of experience building scalable backend systems in modern cloud environments. Proficiency in Java or other JVM-based languages such as Kotlin or Scala is required. A strong understanding of API design, modular architecture, and developer experience principles is essential. Experience with service frameworks, deployment pipelines, and shared libraries is necessary, along with familiarity with cloud infrastructure, preferably AWS. Excellent collaboration and communication skills are important, as the role involves working in cross-functional teams. A solid grasp of data structures and algorithms, with the ability to reason about complexity and scalability in distributed systems, is also required.
Canva offers a range of benefits to support its employees, including equity packages to share in the company's success, an inclusive parental leave policy that supports all parents and carers, and an annual Vibe & Thrive allowance to support wellbeing, social connection, office setup, and more. Flexible leave options are available to empower employees to take time to recharge and support personal needs.
Joining Canva means becoming part of a team that is redefining how the world experiences design. The company fosters a culture of simplicity, reliability, and innovation, providing opportunities for growth and development. With a focus on empowering engineers and delivering impactful products, Canva offers a dynamic and supportive environment for professionals looking to make a significant impact in the tech industry.
