Senior Software Engineer II (TASER Data Science)
Axon is seeking a Senior Software Engineer II to join its TASER Data Science team, focusing on developing data-driven training systems for law enforcement agencies. The role involves transforming research models into production-grade, reliable, and reusable data products that enhance officer training and safety. The team operates within Axon's TASER division, analyzing device telemetry and behavioral data to create actionable insights aimed at reducing fatal officer-involved shootings by 50% over the next decade.
Key responsibilities include building and deploying data products such as dashboards, metrics systems, and recommendation tools that inform real-world decisions. The engineer will own the deployment of machine learning models, ensuring they are monitored, versioned, and maintained with operational rigor. Additionally, the role involves developing and managing data pipelines from TASER device telemetry to analytics platforms used by agencies and internal stakeholders. Setting technical direction for the team's engineering practices and working across the full stack—from device-side data ingestion to user-facing analytics—are also essential duties.
Candidates must demonstrate high standards in writing production code that is strongly typed, comprehensively tested, and maintainable. Experience in deploying and operating machine learning systems in production, including model serving, monitoring, and failure handling, is required. The ability to identify and prioritize critical technical work, shape technical roadmaps, and influence organizational direction is essential. Experience with real-world, messy data such as device logs, behavioral data, or event streams is also necessary.
Preferred qualifications include an advanced degree in a quantitative or analytical field, with PhDs being highly regarded. An intellectual background outside of computer science, such as in statistics, physics, engineering, biology, economics, linguistics, or philosophy, is valued for the diverse perspectives it brings. Hands-on experience with machine learning production tooling, cloud data platforms in an ML context, and hardware-adjacent data like device telemetry or IoT event logs is advantageous.
Axon offers a competitive salary and 401k with employer match, discretionary paid time off, paid parental leave for all employees, and comprehensive medical, dental, and vision plans. Additional benefits include fitness programs, emotional and mental wellness support, learning and development programs, and employee resource groups. The role is based out of Axon's Seattle office and follows a hybrid schedule, with in-person collaboration from Tuesday through Friday and remote work on Mondays.
