Staff Technical Lead Manager, Planner Reasoning
The Staff Technical Lead Manager, Planner Reasoning at Waymo plays a pivotal role in advancing the behavior of the Waymo Driver, the company's autonomous driving technology. This position is part of the Planner Reasoning Team, which has a broad impact across the organization and is directly responsible for the vehicle's decision-making processes. Waymo, originating from the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, is dedicated to creating the world's most trusted driver, aiming to enhance mobility and reduce traffic-related fatalities.
In this hybrid role, the Technical Lead will collaborate closely with organizational leads and Technical Lead Managers to design and implement comprehensive solutions addressing behavioral driving challenges in new geographic areas. The responsibilities include developing quantitative evaluation techniques to drive data-driven development and working in partnership with teams in Mapping, Product, and the broader Onboard stack to ensure cohesive system integration.
Candidates are required to hold a PhD, Master's, or Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Robotics, or a related field. They should have experience in manipulating and analyzing large datasets, as well as in solving design problems that span multiple components, with a focus on high-quality API design and data-driven evaluation techniques.
Preferred qualifications include experience in the autonomous driving domain, particularly in areas such as motion planning or perception. Proficiency in SQL and C++ is also desirable, along with experience in developing scalable evaluation workflows and building metrics for machine learning models.
The expected base salary range for this full-time position across U.S. locations is between $251,000 and $310,000 USD. Actual starting pay will be based on factors such as exact work location, experience, relevant training and education, and skill level. Waymo employees are also eligible to participate in the company's discretionary annual bonus program, equity incentive plan, and a generous benefits program, subject to eligibility requirements.
